ADAPTATION TRAINING

A controlled first stage of strength and conditioning that prepares your nervous system, muscles, tendons and joints for progressively greater training demands.

The purpose

BUILD THE FOUNDATION FIRST

Adaptation training is useful when you are beginning structured strength work, returning after a break or entering a new phase of athletic preparation. Its purpose is not to exhaust you. It is to rebuild movement quality, tolerance to training volume and confidence under load.

The duration of this phase depends on your training history, current fitness, time away from exercise and the demands of your sport. There is no single number of sessions that suits everyone.

01 / MOVEMENT

Technique before load

We practise stable, repeatable movement patterns and choose variations that match your current ability.

02 / VOLUME

Gradual exposure

Training volume and intensity increase progressively, giving the body time to adapt without unnecessary overload.

03 / READINESS

Preparation for progress

This phase creates a reliable starting point for hypertrophy, strength, power or sport-specific training.

Training content

WHAT DOES IT INCLUDE?

The programme usually centres on fundamental patterns: squatting, hinging, pushing, pulling, carrying and trunk control. Exercises can include squats, deadlift variations and horizontal or overhead presses, but the selection is always adjusted to the individual.

  • Moderate loads and controlled repetitions
  • Technique that remains consistent throughout every set
  • Multi-joint exercises supported by appropriate accessory work
  • Mobility and stability where they are genuinely needed
  • Progress based on response, not a rigid percentage
For athletes

MORE THAN GYM PREPARATION

For an athlete, adaptation also includes work related to the demands of their discipline. Running, jumping, changing direction or handling external load may be introduced progressively before more intensive strength, speed and power training begins.

As a strength and conditioning coach, I use this phase to assess the starting point and decide when the athlete is ready for the next stage—not simply to complete a predetermined number of workouts.
